Current Hamilton County Sheriff Doug Carter, right, shakes the hand of hopeful Sheriff candidate Mark Bowen during his candidacy announcement Tuesday afternoon outside the Hamilton County Government and Judicial Center in Noblesville.
The race for the Hamilton County Republican candidate for sheriff grew to two with Tuesday's official announcement by current Hamilton County Sheriff's department major Mark Bowen who joins former Indianapolis Police Department Sgt. Scott Baldwin competing for the nomination. Voters will chose during primary elections May 4, 2010.
Both candidates so far have a law experience background and are looking to enhance the relationship between public and law enforcement.
Baldwin made his announcement on Sept. 18. Current Sheriff Doug Carter is unable to run again due to term limits.
"My goal as Sheriff is to reconnect law enforcement officers with their roots as public servants, train and inspire officers to do more with less during these financial times and guide the Sheriff's Office to an even greater level of efficiency and professionalism," Baldwin said in a statement announcing his candidacy.
A 13-year veteran of IPD Baldwin currently lives in Noblesville with wife Jaime and two children. Bowen is an 18-year veteran of the Hamilton County Sheriff's department and lives in Fishers with wife Jackie.
"Based on my experience with the Sheriff and leadership, I feel I'm the next likely candidate," Bowen said at the announcement adding he was looking to continue the positive steps taken by Carter in the community.
Bowen pointed out his desire to continue working with young people to make positive choices and keep Hamilton County a top place to move, live and raise a family.
"You have to be progressive," he said.
Both candidates have extensive Web sites for the public to learn more as well as goals, missions and endorsements.
